Charyn Canyon is one of Kazakhstan’s most spectacular natural wonders, often called the “little brother” of the Grand Canyon. Located in the Almaty Region and part of the Charyn National Park, this area is famous for two main spots — the Valley of Castles and the lesser-known but equally stunning Bestamak Canyon.

Why visit Charyn Canyon?

Charyn is a perfect destination for:

  • traveling in Kazakhstan
  • weekend trips from Almaty
  • photography and drone shoots
  • hiking and camping
  • exploring unique landscapes

The canyon’s views are breathtaking and resemble scenes from a sci-fi movie.

How to get to Charyn Canyon?

  • About 200 km (3–3.5 hours by car) from Almaty
  • Take the Kulja highway toward Shonzhy village
  • Turn at Bakhty village toward the canyon

The best option is by private car or on an organized tour. There’s limited mobile signal and no shops nearby, so bring enough water and food in advance.

What to see there?

  • Valley of Castles — the most popular trail, with giant rock formations that look like ancient fortresses. The walk is about 2.5 km one way.
  • Bestamak Canyon — a quieter, less touristy spot with colorful layers and scenic views. You can drive down into the canyon (SUV required).

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons. Summers are very hot. In spring, the canyon is surrounded by blooming poppy fields, while in autumn, golden colors dominate the steppe.
