Bartogai Reservoir – Hidden Water Oasis in the Steppes of Almaty Region

Located 186 km east of Almaty, Bartogai Reservoir is a scenic water basin nestled in a narrow mountain gorge along the Chilik River. Built for irrigation purposes, the reservoir stretches across the Bartogai natural valley, surrounded by dry steppe hills and backed by the peaks of the Zailiyskiy Alatau.

During summer (June–September), the reservoir’s water is released to irrigate fields via a 160 km canal, revealing dramatic red shorelines as the level drops. The bright sky-blue water against the arid terrain creates a stunning, almost surreal landscape.

Bartogai is also a popular spot for birdwatching, especially during seasonal migrations. Outdoor lovers come here for rafting, kayaking, and remote nature experiences far from crowds.
