Kolsay Lakes – The Precious Gems of the Tien Shan Mountains

Discover the breathtaking Kolsay Lakes, often called the Pearl of the Tien Shan. Located just 300 kilometers from Almaty, in the scenic foothills of the Kungei Alatau ridge, these three stunning mountain lakes in Kazakhstan form a natural cascade across different altitudes. Their untouched beauty and serene atmosphere have earned them the nickname “Kazakh Switzerland”.

The lower Kolsay Lake lies at 1800 meters above sea level, the middle lake at 2250 meters, and the upper Kolsay Lake – the highest and most remote – is perched at 2800 meters. Each lake offers a unique view of the surrounding alpine landscapes and is a perfect destination for eco-tourism and hiking in Kazakhstan.

Each Lake Has Its Own Spirit

The first to welcome travelers is Lake Saty, with a depth of 80 meters and a length of about 400 meters. It’s ideal for lakeside walks and photo opportunities. A narrow mountain trail leads half a kilometer higher to the second lake, Mynzhilgy – the largest and most picturesque of the three. Tucked away in the mountains, it’s a peaceful haven for nature lovers. The Upper Kolsay Lake, the smallest and highest, is surrounded by majestic rocky cliffs and fir-covered slopes.

A Symphony of Colors and Nature

One of the most fascinating features of the Kolsay Lakes is how the water changes color throughout the day – from soft azure to deep emerald – reflecting the light and the surrounding Tien Shan fir trees. Around the lakes, you’ll find an incredible variety of Kazakh flora: delicate white edelweiss flowers, burgundy-red bushes, and gnarled deciduous trees blending with the evergreens.

Whether you’re into mountain tourism, peaceful retreats, or just looking to explore the best of nature tourism in Kazakhstan, a visit to Kolsay Lakes promises unforgettable moments in the heart of the Tien Shan mountains.
