Lake Kaindy (also spelled Kaiyndy), located at an altitude of 1,900 meters in the Tien Shan mountain range, is one of the most unique natural landmarks of Kazakhstan. This mysterious sunken forest lake was formed in 1911 after a powerful earthquake triggered a landslide, blocking a gorge and filling the valley with water. As a result, an underwater forest emerged, creating one of the most surreal and iconic places in Central Asia.
Unlike most alpine lakes, Lake Kaindy is relatively young – just over 100 years old. The cold mountain water, which rarely exceeds 6°C even in summer, preserved the submerged trunks of spruce trees that now rise ghost-like above the surface. Beneath the crystal-clear water, the trees appear almost untouched, giving the lake its legendary, otherworldly look.
With its light turquoise water, peaceful silence, and striking scenery, Lake Kaindy has become a favorite destination for eco-tourism and photographers seeking dramatic natural beauty. From April to September, visitors can camp near the lake or stay in comfortable guesthouses located in the nearby Kolsai Lakes area. Many local travel agencies in Kazakhstan offer organized tours to Lake Kaindy, often combined with hikes or horseback rides in the Kungei Alatau mountains.
Whether you’re drawn by its beauty, history, or mystery, Lake Kaindy is a must-see destination for anyone exploring the mountain lakes of Kazakhstan.
