Lake Issyk – Alpine Lake Near Almaty with Turquoise Waters

Lake Issyk (Esik Lake) is a scenic mountain lake in the Issyk Gorge, just 70 km from Almaty. Surrounded by the forested slopes of the Trans-Ili Alatau, this turquoise alpine lake is a popular destination for travelers looking for nature, fresh air, and spectacular views.

Formed thousands of years ago by a natural landslide, Issyk Lake has a dramatic history. Although partially destroyed by a mudflow in 1963, it remains one of the most beautiful and accessible lakes in Kazakhstan today.

The lake is perfect for short hikes, picnics, and relaxing by the water. It’s often included in tours along with Turgen waterfalls, Assy Plateau, or a visit to the nearby Saka burial complex and the Golden Man Museum.
